A Guess Would Be Fine

The apartment person was very evasive about possible rent increases, even though you would think that she at least had the data to come up with a +or- range. But it was the right place for the right price (now), so we let her off the hook.

Internet Dead

My internet has died. I am posting from somewhere else. There can be no comic uploaded until at least Wednesday.

Army

I think the best part about being bad at drawing can be found in the 4th panel. Is the friend compassionate for the plight of the army men, and is just laughing along awkwardly? Or did I make a mistake while forming his mouth, but was using pen and couldn't go back and fix it? You'll never know.

Engagement

I was waiting for a way to mention this on my blog, perhaps in comic form, but I decided my "artistic" skill couldn't do it justice.

Amanda proposed to me this last weekend, while we were spending the night at the MRH in Nashville. I said I'd love to.

I'll be out of town until Monday night, so Monday's comic will be late.

The Life Aquatic

The Life Aquatic came out on video recently, and this weekend I got to watch it for the first time since the theater. I love this movie.

I love its world-building. It creates a different place, shows elements of it, and that tantalizes me. I want to explore the world of the movie. I want to watch all of the episodes, I want to get a massage on the Belaphonte, I want to go to all the tornadoed-out islands with pirate-infested resorts, I want to meet all these life times ten characters. To me the movie builds the world the way any good sci-fi does: it sets up the elements in such a way that there seems to be a lot more. It shows great imagination, and then lets the viewer add to it with their own imaginings.

I've found a lot of sci-fi falls into the trap of explaining too much. It builds a world, and then presents it to the viewer, complete and flat. Or what it does explain is too dull, and fails to inspire the viewer.

I like other aspects of the movie, but that's what gets me the most.

Also, I biked about ~45 miles this weekend. Nathan has the details.

Caesar's Bathtime

Behold, the Caesar's Bath meme! List five things that people in your circle of friends or peer group are wild about, but you can't really understand the fuss over. To use the words of Caesar (from History of the World Part I), "Nice. Nice. Not thrilling...but nice."

This was passed to me from Zhubin.

  • Racing Computer Games. This is mostly because I'm bad at them. But in games like Gran Turismo, I can't even have the fun of banging up the car, or making it explode in a ball of flame.
  • Country Music. I keep telling myself, surely there's country music out there that I'd like. It's just that I'm only hearing the lousy radio pop stuff. But there's finally going to be the CM song I like someday. But I haven't heard it yet.
  • Shaving. Seriously, some people do this every day.
  • Competetive Sports. I did track in high school for two reasons: (1) my dad said I needed a sport for college (2) track had no tryouts - and I didn't have to be good because you really can't drag down the track team by being bad. Then I was good at it, and the coaches wanted me to improve. No way, not for me. I am also not really a fan of watching them. The competetive sports, or the coaches. They were ugly. The coaches.
  • Being A Friend of Mine and Updating My Blog Infrequently. That's you, Garrett, Nathan, Amanda.

OK, now I pass this to Amanda, Nathan, and Garrett.

Spring Has Sprung

I have always found spring to be the most intense of seasons, for a variety of contextual reasons. What is most weird this time, is that this time there are none of those reasons for spring to be so caustically melancholy, but here it is.

Student Loans

I am filling out page after page of financial aid forms and loan applications and I have no idea what I'm doing. This might be a good visual representation of how I feel:

"You know when you're leaning back in a chair and then you lean way back and you're just on two legs and then you lean just a little far and you almost fall but at the last minute you catch yourself? I feel like that all the time."
