I think that if you've set a goal of making a standardized format in which people can write research papers and journal articles, making them all meet the same standards of readability and utility, across institutions and national boundaries, and it takes a whole book to outline your rules, you've failed. You're a failure. Instead of a useful tool, it has become a boundary.

You had a good initial idea. If everyone writes citations the same way, wouldn't that be cool? Great, let's make that a rule. But you know what's the problem with rules? You shouldn't make one if it needs 13,000 exceptions. That makes the rule a failure. And you? That's right, you're a failure too.

Edit: in all fairness, I've never cracked the book open. It might be a really enjoyable read. Who knows?

It's been a while since I've built anything. I had hoped to over break, but of course I didn't get any inspiration until I no longer had time to build anything. So now I've got two spaceships to show off.

The first is a minifigure scale Type VII Shuttlecraft from Star Trek. I actually built this one fairly shortly after my Type VI Shuttle, but never got around to photographing and posting it. So here it is:

I also have something I'm calling an "Industrial Craft". I've got a building technique that allows me to have studs on four sides, and that pretty much inspired the whole thing. Also, I tried to make a better use of color than I usually do, and I wanted to include landing gear. The landing gear ended up being my favorite part.

It is chunky.

I am particularly annoyed by nursing's attempt to switch from 'patient' to 'client'. At least they're just wasting their time and money rather than anything more sinister, but I'd like to be able to expect more from my future profession.

For the next couple of weeks I'm going to be travelling a bit, so the update consistencyt here may get kind of weird. I've uploaded the next 3 comics to my Maj.com folder so that all I need to do is post them to the blog while I'm on the road, but there's a chance I won't even be able to do that. So, if you are the impatient type, you can go hunting for them in the folder, but they'll get posted eventually.

Also of note, Bryce remarked that "everyone else's blog sucks." While I take that it as the compliment it was intended as, I would like to point people to Aaron's new blog, The Lazy Skeptic. He's putting time and effort into it, and it shows. A word of warning though: it looks like he's only done one post, but that's just because of the way he has it set up. A while back, Zhubin asked me to point out some favorite webcomics to him. I've been thinking about it a bit, and now that finals are over I have time to write up a list of the comics I read, why, and what I would like to read.

Regulars

Penny Arcade.
Starslip Crisis is the daily webcomic by the guy who did Checkerboard Nightmare for 5 years before recently bringing it to a close. The latter is hilarious (if reference-dense) webcomics commentary, and is still updated sporadically as webcomic drama sprouts up. The former is relatively new, so there's not a whole lot of archives to go through, and concerns a space-faring art-gallery. It's good. Start from the begining.
I really respect daily webcomics like Diesel Sweeties, especially if they're consistently amusing. Sweeties rarely makes me outright laugh, but it never lets me down 5 days a week. There's sort of a storyline, but there's no need to follow it to enjoy the strip.
Overcompensating is an exceptional journal comic by Jeffrey Rowland. I had been pointed to his other comic, When I Grow Up, several times, but was never able to get into it. It was not until I had discovered and come to appreciate Overcompensating that I was able to finally make it through the WIGU archives (to do WIGU justice, an archive trawl is needed). I love them both now.
The Perry Bible Fellowshipis very dark. It makes me laugh, and makes me scared. I fear this comic.
Cat and Girl is my snob comic. Literary references abound. I've found it to be particularly inaccessible lately, but the archives are always there.
Questionable Content contains very attractively drawn women. It's big for a daily, but I've found the writing to be very hit-or-miss. I read it for the hits.
Bob the Angry Flower only updates on fridays and has long since passed its prime. It's still decent, but I mainly read it now out of a love for what it once was. The archives are incredibly worth going through.
VG Cats is always funny. There are times when I know I'm not getting as much out of it as someone who is familiar with all the videogames it parodies, but it is incredibly consistent.
I am conflicted about Real Life Comics. Right now it really feels like the author is sick of doing it. Which is really unfortunate, because I loved it when he loved it. Now I read it due to inertia.
White Ninja is good.

Rob and Elliot is a comic that I discovered through the Webcomics Hurricaine Telethon, and since it is fairly young I did a full archive trawl. It's a good comic, and I should add it to my regulars list soon.
I began to like Daily Dinosaur Comics kind of despite myself. Its art is the same every day, so my instict was to thumb my nose at it as one would the random internet scribblings of Friend Bear. But it's actually consistently funny. I haven't gone through the archives and don't really plan to. It has a nice random comic feature that allows the strip to be better as an infrequent treat.
I've read Sam and Fuzzy pretty regularly for the past month. I need to get around to doing a full archive trawl.
Nothing Nice to Say and The Coffee Achievers are pretty interesting, I'm working my way through the archives now.
Mac Hall has gorgeous art and is updated exceptionally rarely.

Type VI Shuttlecraft

I made this this weekend. It is a minifigure scale Type VI Shuttlecraft from Star Trek TNG. It was fun to research, and it was good to dive back into the legos for the first time since I sorted them this summer. However, I think the stark shadows from the lighting I used make the slope a little too bricky looking. Which it is, I just want it to be less obvious. So before I set up an MOCPage I'm going to take more pictures.

At the MIT lecture, which was really a question and answer session, only with awesome answerers, Gabe was asked the following: Now that you are a father yourself, do you find that your attitudes towards videogames and violence and children are changing?

After obligatory responses about being okay with a rating system that meant something, and that as our generation becomes parents we'll actually know about games and what would be good for our kids, he revealed his real fear. He knows that since sons rebel against their fathers, and that he is not so out of touch so as to think that he'd be an exception, there's a good chance that if things go the way they are now his son will grow to dislike videogames.

But Gabe's got a plan.

From here on out, it's going to be button-down-shirts and go-to-church-sundays. There will be no swearing, no games, no fun for little Gabe Junior. Cable channels locked out, impeccable manners at the dinner table.

But when his son is 16, he'll come home with the newest game system. And he'll say "Screw you dad! I'm playing violent video games and you can't stop me!" And Gabe will open up a closet door, revealing his full collection of various game systems. And he'll say:

"What do you want to play, son?"

I found that story positively heartwarming, but I'd be hard pressed to say why.
